THE CLIMA' TOUR
Meet us!

THE CLIMATE TRANSITION IN GENEVA IS UNDERWAY

serrurefaire le quiz

The efforts made over the last few years are aimed at reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, preventing the effects of climate change on our daily lives, and helping us to adapt by improving our quality of life.

Together, we hold the key to the climate!

The ecological and climate transition requires close collaboration between the Canton, local authorities, businesses, associations, and the population of Geneva.

Everyone can do their bit to help achieve the climate targets.

After having declared the climate emergency in December 2019, the Council of State has strengthened the canton's climate objectives via its Cantonal Climate Plan 2030 - 2nd generation, with a view to an ecological transition offering new opportunities.

It creates a positive territorial dynamic, local wealth, and jobs, and promotes sustainable construction, short local food circuits, and the circular economy. The climate plan gives us the means to preserve our quality of life, our health, our environment, and local natural resources.

OUR CLIMATE IS CHANGING

serrure
What are we talking about?

Climate change is the long-term variation of weather conditions on Earth.
Today, the climate is changing because of human activity - a first on a global scale. These activities are releasing large quantities of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere. Nature is no longer able to absorb them. This excess of GHGs traps the sun's heat in the atmosphere, causing global warming. This phenomenon is known as the greenhouse effect.
As a result, Switzerland has already seen an average temperature rise of +2.5°C since 1864, double the global increase. This rise is accelerating and could reach up to 7° in Switzerland by 2100. The global objective is to limit the rise in temperature to 1.5°C by the end of the century, thereby avoiding major upheavals.

Visible effects

As the atmosphere warms, natural cycles change, and weather events become more extreme.
The effects of this rise in temperature are clearly visible, with an increase in heatwaves, in the intensity and frequency of heavy rainfall, and a decrease in snowfall in the mountains in winter.
This also leads to changes and deterioration in the local flora and fauna. Many animal and plant species are under threat and invasive species are developing.
These changes are making our living conditions more difficult: health problems (cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, allergies, etc. - Fragile people, such as the elderly, are particularly affected), negative impact on agriculture, crops and watercourses, damage to infrastructure, etc.

And what about today?

To limit the upheavals linked to climate change, we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt our lifestyles to the changes that are already perceptible and those that will come.
To achieve this, Geneva must continue its ecological and climatic transition. That means changing, at our own level, the way we consume, eat, travel, live and live together. We have key solutions for achieving this. Businesses and public authorities such as countries, cantons and municipalities have an essential role to play in developing the legal framework conditions and infrastructures that will support this societal transformation.
The State of Geneva is taking action for the climate and involving all the stakeholders in society to work together to meet the challenges posed by the climate emergency.

GENEVA CLIMATE PLAN

serrure

The 2030 cantonal climate
plan gives us the keys to reduce our emissions and adapt to climate change.

The 7 pillars of the climate plan, along with its 41 concrete measures, aim to:

  1. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2030

  2. Make our canton carbon neutral by 2050 at the latest

The aim of the climate plan is to give us the means to protect ourselves from the:
  • increase in heat waves (heatwaves)
  • increase in other extreme weather events and their effects (landslides, hail, floods, etc.)
  • degradation of our natural resources
  • increase in health problems linked to the more rapid spread of pathogens (viruses, etc.)
  • major damage to our infrastructure
  • global social upheaval that these effects will cause
... and to preserve:
  • natural environments, natural resources, and biodiversity
  • agriculture and food production
  • our health and safetyour quality of life and well-being

THE STATE AND THE STAKEHOLDERS TAKE ACTION

The climate plan is on the move and Geneva is taking concrete action for the ecological and climate transition

The ecological and climate transition requires the commitment of citizens, public authorities, and businesses. All parties play a complementary and essential role in achieving our objectives and creating a more sustainable model of society that respects the environment.

The Canton and the City of Geneva are supporting the development of the "AGIRAGENEVE" platform, developed by the Goodtrack association, which proposes concrete actions to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, linked to a directory of partners and local support.

Examples of concrete initiatives and actions of benefit to society as a whole:

Axe 1 - Energy and buildings

Axe 5 - Health

Axe 6 - Natural areas and biodiversity
