The State’s Commitment to Philanthropy
The Canton of Geneva’s support for philanthropy is guided by a clear vision: making it easier for foundations to emerge, settle and shine, for the benefit of local society and global causes.

Geneva stands in a long tradition of solidarity, underpinned by an ongoing political will to support players serving the public interest. The State actively works to provide a favourable setting for philanthropy to grow: one that is diverse, professional, and globally connected. This commitment is reflected in targeted support, coherent tax incentives, and joining up the city’s expertise, all in service of the common good.

A strong framework for diverse stakeholders

Geneva’s philanthropy covers a wide range of fields, from health, culture, education and social innovation to human rights and the environment. To sustain this rich environment, the State provides a robust legal framework, attractive tax exemptions, and a listening ear – regardless of the foundation or association's size and profile. This approach encourages a dynamic, ever evolving environment for philanthropy to thrive.

Three pillars for public action

  • The Cantonal Office for the Economy and Innovation (OCEI) supports the vitality of the philanthropy sector by linking up private initiatives, impact-driven projects, and other economic stakeholders. It is also a point of contact for foundations and associations seeking to better understand Geneva’s environment.
  • The Cantonal Tax Administration applies a tax exemption regime in line with with federal practice, while taking the specific local context into account. This policy encourages private generosity and enables recognised public-benefit organisations to fulfil their missions.
  • The Supervisory Authority for Foundations and Occupational Pension Institutions (ASFIP) ensures compliance with statutory objectives and sound governance. It also guarantees transparency and long-term sustainability for the sector.

A collaborative, future-facing vision

Aware of the challenges faced by the philanthropy sector, the State of Geneva promotes networking, the sharing of good practices, and access to information through this portal. It relies on strong partnerships with the University of Geneva’s Centre for Philanthropy, SwissFoundations and proFonds to drive research, training, and dialogue. This integrated ecosystem reflects the canton’s ambition: to make Geneva a recognised philanthropy hub known for its professionalism, diversity, and ability to connect local and international stakeholders in service of the common good.
