Geneva’s position as an international hub for philanthropy needs to be made more visible and attractive. This is the thrust of the recommendations issued by the Geneva Centre for Philanthropy (GCP) at the University of Geneva. The canton is currently home to nearly 1,400 foundations, managing more than CHF 25 billion in assets and redistributing several billion francs every year, notably contributing to the quality of life of the people of Geneva. To respond to the needs of sector stakeholders, a series of measures to facilitate their activities and enhance Geneva’s attractiveness will be implemented. A specific set of tax-related measures will be developed in cooperation with the Department of Finance (DF).

Following the press release issued a few weeks ago, the English version of the report "The philanthropic sector in Geneva", produced by the Geneva Centre for Philanthropy (GCP) on behalf of the Département de l'économie et de l'emploi, is now available. This translation meets the expectations of Geneva’s philanthropic community, which is largely English-speaking, and makes the findings of this landmark study more accessible to all international stakeholders active in the canton. The report highlights the exceptional dynamism of Geneva’s 1,367 foundations, which together hold assets exceeding 25 billion Swiss francs and distribute nearly 9 billion francs in grants each year. These organisations make a significant contribution to Geneva’s prosperity, quality of life and international standing, while supporting vital development projects worldwide. Building on these findings, the Département de l'économie et de l'emploi is currently working on a roadmap to further strengthen and facilitate philanthropic activity in the canton.
