Overview
The renewal of your residence or work permit depends on the type of permit you have and your nationality.
Extend a durable B permit or a C permit
For whom
You hold a durable B permit or a C permit that expires soon.
When
Normally you will receive a notice of expiry one month before the expiration date of your residence permit. Simply follow its instructions on renewing your permit.
If you have not received a notice of expiry, you must send in the completed Form K by postal mail no later than 15 days before the expiry of your permit.
Once you have submitted your renewal application and as long as your expired permit allowed you to engage in a gainful activity, you may continue to work pending our decision.
Upon receipt of the renewed permit, the expired permit must be destroyed or returned destroyed (cut in half) by postal mail to the OCPM.
Attachments
- notice of expiry (original document) or Form K
- a colour copy of a valid I.D.
Additional documents required:
- 1st renewal of permit for non EU/EFTA spouses of a C or B permit holder:
- French-language certificate if it has not yet been submitted
- French-language certificate if it has not yet been submitted
- Renewal of B permit for non EU/EFTA nationals who are dependent on social assistance for an amount equal to or greater than CHF 50'000.- (for 1 person alone) or CHF 80'000.- (for a household of several people):
- A letter outlining the reasons for and steps taken to exit social assistance
- If the dependency on social assistance is due to medical reasons: a copy of a medical certificate clearly mentioning the situation
- Proof of any training followed in connection with vocational reintegration
- Extension of C permit for people (all nationalities) who are long-term (more than 2 years) and largely (equal to or more than CHF 80'000.- per person) dependent on social assistance:
- A letter outlining the reasons for and steps taken to exit social assistance
- If the dependency on social assistance is due to medical reasons: a copy of a medical certificate clearly mentioning the situation
- Proof of any training followed in connection with vocational reintegration
In certain cases, other supporting documents may be requested.

Payment is made by QR invoice sent with the notice of expiry or on the basis of an invoice which will be sent by post after reception of the K form.

Extend a cross-border work permit
For whom
You hold a cross-border work permit that expires soon and are still working with the same employer.
When
Normally, your employer receives a notice of expiry one month before the expiration date of your cross-border work authorisation. Simply follow its instruction on renewal of your permit.
If your employer has not received a notice of expiry, you should submit your renewal application via our online form.
Upon receipt of the renewed permit, the expired permit must be destroyed or returned destroyed (cut in half) by postal mail to the OCPM.
Attachments
- a colour copy of a valid I.D.
- attestation of the employer or a copy of the work contract
- copy of civil status documents in the event of a change

Extend an N or F permit
For whom
You hold an N or F permit that is expiring soon.
When
15 days before your permit expires.
What
Depending on the status of the procedure, your permit may be renewed or an emergency assistance certificate may be given to you.
The maximum duration of extension is, depending on the state of the procedure:
- 1 year for N permits
- 1 year for F permits
How
You must come in person to the Protection, Asylum and Return Service desks with your N or F permit in order to have it extended.
If you hold an N permit and are gainfully employed, you must also bring the N form completed and signed by your employer.

Extend an L permit or a conditional B permit
For whom
You hold a short-term residence permit (L permit) or a conditional residence permit (B permit) that expires soon.
When
The request for an extension of your authorisation must be sent at least 15 days before its expiration date.
Terms
If you are a national of a third country, your employer must apply for the extension of your permit.
In principle, third-country nationals holding an L permit may not change jobs.
Upon receipt of the renewed permit, the expired permit must be destroyed or returned destroyed (cut in half) by postal mail to the OCPM.

- completed K form
- colour copy of a valid I.D.
Any relevant supporting evidence as requested by the foreign labour service when the permit was originally applied for.
Price
An invoice will be sent by post after receipt of form K.
The applications of third-country nationals are submitted for examination to the foreign labour service, which receives a fee.

Extend a Ci permit
For whom
You hold an expiring Ci permit and continue your gainful activity.
When
Renewal of your permit must be requested no later than 15 days before the end of its validity.
Upon receipt of the renewed permit, the expired permit must be destroyed or returned destroyed (cut in half) by postal mail to the OCPM.
Attachments
- form K duly completed and signed
- copy of the legitimation card of the principal holder (spouse, father, mother, partner, etc.)
- colour copy of a valid I.D.
Price
An invoice will be sent by post after receipt of form K.

Extend a student permit
For whom
You hold a student permit that expires soon and would like to extend it to continue your studies.
When
Renewal of your permit must be requested no later than 15 days before the end of its validity.
Upon receipt of the renewed permit, the expired permit must be destroyed or returned destroyed (cut in half) by postal mail to the OCPM.

- form E duly completed and signed
- colour copy of a valid I.D.
- school registration certificate for the current year
- for non EU/EFTA nationals: proof of financial means or sponsorship certificate (Form O)
- cover letter in case of change of course or new course
Price
An invoice will be sent by post after receipt of Form E.
