5. Requesting a lost property certificate

Regulations do not allow the lost property office to return lost identity documents to their owner. However, it can issue you with a lost property certificate.

The lost property certificate is required to apply for new Swiss identity documents or a duplicate residence permit. Your insurance company may also ask you for it.

For who

  • Swiss nationals who have lost their Swiss identity documents.
  • Foreign nationals who have lost their residence permit.
  • Foreign nationals who have lost their identity documents.
  • Anyone who needs a certificate for their insurance company.
     

When

The lost property office is open from Monday to Friday. It is important to arrive at least 15 minutes before the office closes, i.e.:

Price

The certificate costs CHF 40.
The fee must be paid at the lost property office when the certificate is issued.

Accepted payment methods: TWINT, PostFinance, debit/credit cards and cash in Swiss francs.

 

Requesting a lost property certificate

Loss of Swiss identity documents
If you have lost your identity documents, you must request a lost property certificate from the lost property office, which you can then submit to your local council or the cantonal office for population and migration (OCPM) to request new identity documents.

Loss of residence permit
If you have lost your residence permit, you must request a certificate of loss from the lost property office, which you can then submit to the cantonal office for population and migration (OCPM) to request a duplicate residence permit.

Loss of foreign identity documents
If you have lost your identity documents in the canton of Geneva, you can request a certificate of loss from the lost property office if your consulate requires one.

Lost property certificate for insurance purposes
The request must be made directly at the lost property office.
