1. Overview

Whether you have lost or found keys, a wallet, a telephone or even identity documents, the lost property office centralises all lost items in the canton of Geneva that are reported to it.

Registering a lost item allows the lost property service to contact you when your item is found.

To replace your lost identity documents, you must request a certificate of loss. The certificate of loss may also be useful for insurance purposes.

2. Recovering lost item

Items lost in the canton of Geneva and handed in to a police station or the Geneva public transports (TPG) are centralised at the lost property office. Each item handed in is treated with care, and when the owner can be identified, the service attempts to contact him or her as soon as possible.

Anyone who has lost an item, whether it is valuable or not, in the canton of Geneva can contact the lost property office to retrieve it.
 

How

At the lots property office

You can go directly to the lost property office with all the relevant information (photos, invoice, description of the item, IMEI number for smartphones or tablets, etc.). You can also call us or send us an email.

Papiers d'identité

The lost property office does not return lost identity documents or residence permits.

To enable you to replace your identity documents, you should request a certificate of loss or a duplicate residence permit.

When

It is best to contact the lost property office as soon as possible, preferably the day after you lose your item.

Some items, such as keys, may take several days to arrive at the office.

Lost property handed in to a police station or the TPG is automatically passed on to the lost property office. It can usually be collected from the lost property office the following day (except at weekends).

You must present your identity card at the lost property office.

Price

The price for returning your item depends on its value. You will be charged a minimum of CHF 10.

Accepted payment methods : TWINT, PostFinance, debit/credit cards and cash in Swiss francs.

3. Bringing in a found item

Bringing a found item to the authorities gives its owner a chance to get it back.

For who

Anyone who finds an item, whether valuable or not, in the canton of Geneva can return it to the authorities.
 

Where

You can hand in the found item:

  • At the lost property office during opening hours or in the secure letterbox accessible 24 hours a day
  • At the nearest police station
  • To the driver or an authorised agent working for the Geneva public transports (TPG) if you found the item on public transport in Geneva.

4. Filing a lost property report online

The lost property office of the canton of Geneva provides access to the national platform easyfind.ch, which is dedicated to lost property. This platform allows you to file a lost property report online.

Creating a lost property report means that you will be contacted by the lost property service when your item is found.

Price

Filing a report online is free of charge.

5. Requesting a lost property certificate

Regulations do not allow the lost property office to return lost identity documents to their owner. However, it can issue you with a lost property certificate.

The lost property certificate is required to apply for new Swiss identity documents or a duplicate residence permit. Your insurance company may also ask you for it.

  • Swiss nationals who have lost their Swiss identity documents.
  • Foreign nationals who have lost their residence permit.
  • Foreign nationals who have lost their identity documents.
  • Anyone who needs a certificate for their insurance company.
     

When

The lost property office is open from Monday to Friday. It is important to arrive at least 15 minutes before the office closes, i.e.:

Price

The certificate costs CHF 40.
The fee must be paid at the lost property office when the certificate is issued.

Requesting a lost property certificate

Loss of Swiss identity documents
If you have lost your identity documents, you must request a lost property certificate from the lost property office, which you can then submit to your local council or the cantonal office for population and migration (OCPM) to request new identity documents.

Loss of residence permit
If you have lost your residence permit, you must request a certificate of loss from the lost property office, which you can then submit to the cantonal office for population and migration (OCPM) to request a duplicate residence permit.

Loss of foreign identity documents
If you have lost your identity documents in the canton of Geneva, you can request a certificate of loss from the lost property office if your consulate requires one.

Lost property certificate for insurance purposes
The request must be made directly at the lost property office.
