Geneva's assets

At the crossroads between many nations and as a European hub for multilateral governance, Geneva is the place where humanity meets technology, enabling balanced, diversified growth and technical development. Rich collaborations between economic stakeholders result in a unique creativity. This is the canton's contribution to Switzerland’s frequent ranking at the top of the most innovative countries in the world.

An International Crossroads

Geneva's strategic position makes the canton a centre for global governance and multilateral diplomacy. Home to 39 international organisations, 460 NGOs, and nearly 33,000 dedicated professionals working in IOs, NGOs and permanent missions, with 196 nationalities represented, the canton plays a crucial role in international exchanges.

Tradition of Innovation

Geneva is home to institutions dedicated to research and innovation in the science, health and industry sectors, to name just a few. CERN for particle physics, the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), and the Geneva Foundation for Technological Innovation (FONGIT) all contribute to the region’s attractiveness on an international scale and place the canton at the forefront of innovation.

Économie durable

Sustainable Economy

The 1987 publication of the Brundtland Report by the United Nations democratised and globalised the concept of sustainable development. Geneva is home to the Building Bridges initiative, a movement aimed at catalysing the economy’s transition towards a global economic model that meets the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Geneva has established itself as the place where “finance meets impact”, launching decisive initiatives in sustainable economy.

Collective Intelligence

With no fewer than 20 Nobel Prizes awarded to its public figures and institutions, Geneva has seen internationally-recognised talents emerge from its higher education institutions. The canton’s status as an economic crossroads provides many opportunities to share ideas for progress. Geneva is also home to WIPO (the World Intellectual Property Organization) which protects inventors’ patents and promotes research. When it comes to the economic value, this bundle of skills stimulates the emergence of new business models.
