What to do if your residence or work permit is lost or stolen ?

1. Overview

In case of loss or theft of your residence or work permit, it is possible to obtain a duplicate.

To do so, you must first obtain a certificate of loss or theft.

In case of loss

The declaration can be made against a fee of CHF 40 in one of the following locations:

In case of theft

A complaint must be filed at a police station. The certificate of complaint or a copy of the complaint is valid.

Declarations made in other Swiss cantons are also valid. However, in case of loss or theft abroad, the certificate issued by a Swiss authority remains necessary.

The steps to be taken are different depending on the type of permit.

2. B, C or L permit duplicate

For whom

B, C or L permit holders who have lost or had their residence permit stolen may obtain a duplicate.

Terms

If the original document is found, it must immediately be returned to the Cantonal Office for Population and Migration.

  • colour copy of a valid I.D.
  • police report of loss or theft or copy of the complaint filed

If the biometric data are no longer valid, an additional fee of CHF 15 for EU/EFTA nationals and CHF 20 for non-EU/EFTA nationals is collected.

Payment shall be made by means of an invoice sent by post after the application has been submitted.

Processing times

A 30-day examination period is required to obtain the duplicate.

3. G or Ci permit duplicate

For whom

G or Ci permit holders who have lost or had their work permit stolen may obtain a duplicate.

Terms

If the original document is found, it must immediately be returned to the Cantonal Office for Population and Migration.

  • colour copy of a valid I.D.
  • police report of loss or theft or copy of the complaint filed
  • proof from your employer that you are still an employee

Price

  • CHF 50 for adults
  • CHF 30 for minors

Price

This service is free of charge for N permit holders.

For F or S permit holders:

  • CHF 50 for adults
  • CHF 30 for minors
